Stakeholders Seek Clampdown On Illegal Orphanages

…As DTHA Holds Public Hearing

BY ANDREW IKEHI

Pursuant to further legislation on two separate bills; the Delta State Domestic Staff Service Providers (Registration) bill 2024 and, Delta State Child Rights (Amendment) bill 2024, public hearings were held yesterday on both bills in Asaba, the State capital.

Participants at both public hearing drawn from relevant ministries, particularly Justice, Women Affairs and Humanitarian Support Services, youths, among others, were optimistic that the bills, which are currently at the State House of Assembly, when passed into law, would restore sanity in homes and address societal ills.

The stakeholders in their various submissions, lauded the proponents of the bills saying that it would help in addressing the growing societal challenge in the contemporary times.

Specifically, the stakeholders frowned at the proliferation of illegal orphanages in the State.

In his remark, the Chairman House Committee on Housing, Women Affairs and Humanitarian Support Services, Hon. Bridget Anyafulu said that the Domestic Staff Service Providers Registration Bill when passed, would ensure that the State has a registry of domestic staff providers.

In a post hearing interview, Anyafulu explained that the State will continue to take the lead in best practices, particularly and in relation to the adoption of children.

She emphasized that the child Rights amendment bill would not only clamp down on illegal orphanage across the State but also safeguard the interest of children particularly in the process of adoption.

While assuring stakeholders that the committee will do a thorough job on the both bills, Hon Anyafulu enjoined stakeholders to continue to support the Delta State Government through the various MDAs in the implementation of the law.

Present at the public hearing were representatives from Ministries of Justice, Women Affairs, Humanitarian support Services and other NGOs who made meaningful contribution and recommendations to the committee for further consideration.
