Tonukari Pledges Support For Delta Maritime Polytechnic

BY IFEANYI UWAGWU

THE Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof Nyerhovwo Tonukari has pledged robust support for the State Maritime Polytechnic, Burutu, during his recent official visit to the institution.

During the visit, the Rector of the polytechnic, Prof James Okoro, highlighted significant achievements and ongoing challenges. He noted the institution’s previous misplacement under the Ministry of Transport, which hindered its growth until it was correctly placed under the Ministry of Education.

Prof Okoro expressed gratitude for the commissioner’s visit and spotlighted accomplishments, including the unprecedented 2024 budgetary approval of approximately N2bn, enlistment for TETFUND intervention, staff promotions, and successful collaborations with staff and student unions.

Despite these strides, the Rector pointed out several pressing issues: the need to complete abandoned projects, mobilize graduated students for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), secure salary subvention and approved convocation funds, and address inadequate transportation and perimeter fencing at the main campus.

Prof Okoro commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration for its proactive measures in addressing these challenges within a short period of less than two years. He expressed optimism that the commissioner’s visit signals a transformative change in the polytechnic’s fortunes.

In response, Prof Nyerhovwo Tonukari acknowledged the polytechnic’s achievements and empathized with its challenges. He assured the community of the administration’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for academic excellence and growth.

The commissioner emphasized Governor Oborevwori’s appreciation for the role of technical and vocational education in economic development and pledged to work closely with the polytechnic to overcome its challenges and enhance its status as a leading maritime education institution in Delta and beyond.
