BudgIT Nigeria, a prominent nonprofit organization advocating for transparency in governance, has advocated for citizens to familiarise themselves with the popular government monitoring platform, Tracka.
First introduced in 2014, Tracka has undergone significant rebranding, incorporating personalized features that allow Nigerians to easily access information about government projects in their localities.
BudgIT’s State Coordinator, Pius Okocha, highlighted the platform’s purpose during an interview with our correspondent. He said “Citizen participation in politics and governance has become a notable trend in Nigeria. Public spaces such as newspaper kiosks often serve as meeting points for engaged citizens, where they can discuss and share their views on various issues”.
He said “Delta State is my focus and with the ongoing shift towards digitisation, Tracka has introduced its Community Champions initiative, aimed at providing a platform for responsible individuals to take charge of their rights by actively engaging in the demand for accountability, while operating within the legal framework.
Through research, it has become evident that many individuals, particularly the youth, are deeply concerned with issues of fiscal transparency and accountability. However, they often lack the appropriate avenues to voice their opinions. Tracka’s tailored platform addresses this gap by creating an inclusive space where all perspectives can be heard.
The Community Champions initiative empowers citizens to track ongoing projects in their local areas, report on their progress, and express their views on the quality and significance of these projects. Each registered user is given access to a personalised dashboard, enabling them to take ownership of their voice and advocate for change.
