Renowned Ijaw leader and elder statesman, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, has passed away at the age of 97. His family confirmed his death in a statement released yesterday, signed by Prof. C. Clark.
“The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing on to eternity of Chief Edwin Clark on Monday, February 17.
“The family appreciates your prayers at this time. Other details will be announced later by the family,” the statement read.
Born on 25th May 1927 in Kiagbodo, Delta State, he received his early education at African Church School, Effuru-Otur, and later attended Native Authority School, Okrika.
Clark’s political journey began in 1953 when he was elected as a councillor for Bomadi. He later joined the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) and was active in the West African Students’ Union while studying at Holborn College.
Following the 1966 military coup, he opposed confederation ideas at Gowon’s constitutional conference and later served as Midwestern Commissioner for Education and Finance. His tenure saw the establishment of the Mid-West College of Technology, which laid the foundation for the University of Benin.
During Nigeria’s Second Republic, Clark was a member of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), serving on its national executive committee and as Bendel State’s treasurer. In 1983, he was briefly elected as a senator before the end of the Shagari administration.
Since 1996, Clark has positioned himself as a leader of the Ijaw nation, advocating for his ethnic group, particularly during conflicts in Warri. He has also led Ijaw delegations in political negotiations.He founded the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and co-led the South and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, advocating tirelessly for justice, equality, and human rights.
Clark: Delta Speaker, Guwor Mourns
The Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, has described the death of elder statesman, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark as devastating.
Further describing the death as heartbreaking and personal loss to him, Rt. Hon. Guwor during yesterday’s plenary, paid glowing tribute to the late Nonagenarian who he also, described as an iconic leader.
He said, “Distinguished colleagues, it is with a heavy heart full of pains that I bring to your attention the demise of our renowned elder statesman and foremost National Leader Chief (Dr.) Senator Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, CFR, CON.
“Pa E.K Clark was an enigma and iconoclast. He was a prominent advocate for the rights of the Niger Delta region.
“He was like a book full of many chapters for every one of us. He was a fiery environmental sustainability advocate who spoke truth to power”, Guwor stated.
The Speaker in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, recalled the remarkable journey of Chief Clark, from his early days as a student leader to his distinguished career in public service, saying, “It was a testament to his unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and the advancement of the society”.
Guwor maintained that Chief Clark played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s narrative and promoting national unity, particularly in his days as Federal Commissioner for Information.
He stated further that the late Chief Clark‘s wisdom, courage, and vision inspired generations of Nigerians, and that his legacy will continue to inspire many as they strive to build a better future for themselves and their children.
The Speaker condoled the entire Ijaw nation, noting that the outpouring of love and support from across the globe brings comfort and solace during this difficult time.
“May the soul of our beloved Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark rest in eternal peace, and may his memory continue to inspire us to work towards a more just, equitable, and united Nigeria”, Guwor stated.
Clark, A National Figure Till the End – Okorodudu
Speaking with The Pointer, the Executive Director of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Dr. Ebenezer Okorodudu, expressed profound shock at the passing of Chief Edwin Clark:
“The news of our esteemed father’s passing has left me deeply shocked. For over 30 years, we shared a strong and cordial relationship. He truly embodied the Biblical promise that one’s latter days shall be better than one’s beginning.
“His later years were glorious, but his remarkable journey began early when he became Commissioner for Education at a young age, showcasing his achievements when many had just started their paths. He later served as a senator and minister, maintaining enduring popularity, and in his later years, he was celebrated as the father of the Federation.
“He was forthright, despising oppression, and always spoke with authority on national issues. He refused to be silenced and lived a life free from intimidation, a true national figure till the end.
“My heart goes out to his children, his family, and to Delta State. He was not just a Nigerian but a prominent global leader, representing Delta State and Nigeria.”
Clark’s Death: Niger Delta Mourns – Preyor
The Chairman of the Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Special Projects, Hon. Kenneth Oboro Preyor, also expressed grief at the passing of Chief Clark.
In a statement on his Facebook page, Hon. Preyor, representing Bomadi State Constituency, praised Clark as a staunch advocate for the Nigerian project.
In a seven-paragraph tribute titled “NIGER DELTA MOURNS,” Preyor described Chief Clark as an outspoken and fearless leader dedicated to the liberation of his people. He emphasised that, despite Clark’s passing, his spirit and legacy endure.
“The news of Chief Dr. Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark’s death is a rude shock to us all. Even in old age, his voice on national issues was revered. He was a formidable advocate for the rights of the Niger Delta, fighting for the emancipation of marginalised communities,” Preyorsaid.
“The iroko tree has fallen, leaving a significant void. While some may feel relieved, they must remember that justice will prevail. We should remain hopeful and steadfast in our struggle, believing that we are not abandoned by our creator.”
Hon. Preyor highlighted Clark’s journey from humble beginnings in the creeks to prominence, underscoring his dedication to the cause of his people. “We will miss him dearly, but we will honour his legacy by continuing the fight for justice. Though Pa Clark is gone, his spirit marches on,” he added.
My Father’s Death, Great Loss To Nigeria – Ebikeme Clark
Confirming his father’s passing, the Commissioner for the Directorate of Riverine Infrastructure Development (DRID), Chief Ebikeme Clark, described it as a profound loss to the nation.
He hailed Pa Clark as a true nationalist who tirelessly championed the people’s interests throughout his lifetime.
According to him, “My father fought for the oppressed, brought relief to many, and was a blessing to his generation. He lived a fulfilled life.”
He added that, despite his passing, Pa Clark would continue to be celebrated for the countless lives he touched.
Pa Clark Was Father To All -Safugha
Former Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Barrister Newworld Safugha, has expressed his sorrow over the passing of Pa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, describing it as a great loss to Nigeria.
Safugha, who fondly referred to Pa Clark as ‘Gogorogo,’ said he was a father to all and a relentless advocate for Nigeria’s growth and development.
Doubling as the former Commissioner for Energy in Delta State, he expressed that Pa Clark would be deeply missed by all. Offering his condolences to the bereaved family, he prayed for God’s blessings and for his soul to rest in perfect peace.

The 2023 Senate Candidate for Delta North, Hon. Kenneth Gbandi, has described the death of Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark as a profound loss to the nation.
“Beyond his activism, Pa Clark played a crucial role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, influencing policies and shaping discourse on governance and development. His impact was felt both locally and internationally, as he ensured that the plight of the Niger Delta was recognised on the global stage,” Gbandi said.
He noted that Chief Clark’s passing has drawn tributes from across the nation, describing him as “a towering figure whose contributions to national discourse and regional empowerment will never be forgotten.”
Delta Has Lost A Great Gem- Mulade
Niger Delta-born human and environmental rights activist, Comrade Mulade Sherrif, has lamented the passing of Pa Edwin Clark, calling it the loss of a great gem for Delta State and its citizens.
He praised Clark as a father, leader, and historian who fought for democracy and national unity, serving as Federal Commissioner for Information under General Yakubu Gowon.
Mulade highlighted Clark’s role in establishing the University of Benin and his tenure as the pioneer Chancellor of FUT Minna. Expressing sympathy to his family and followers, he prayed for a worthy successor who would lead with integrity and be recognised beyond Delta State
E K Clark’s Death Shocking – Tunde Smooth
The Bolou-owei (Traditional Prime Minister of the Niger Delta), High Chief Tunde Smooth JP has expressed his shock at the death of Chief Dr. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark JP, who passed away on Monday night in Abuja.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Warri, Delta State, Smooth noted that Clark’s death has come as a shock to Nigerians, Niger Deltans, and particularly the Ijaw Nation.
The Chairman of SMU_TUNS Nigeria Limited remarked that Clark has left an indelible legacy through his immense contributions to the peace, growth, and stability of the country.
“Chief E. K. Clark OFR, CON, was a pillar and a strong voice. His leadership was exemplary and impactful. He will be missed for what he represented,” he said.
Smooth extended his condolences to Clark’s family and the Kiagbodo community, urging them to take comfort in the knowledge that Pa Clark lived a fulfilled life and positively impacted many.

A Mighty Iroko Tree Has Fallen – PANDEF
The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has announced the passing of Chief Senator Dr. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, a respected national leader and elder statesman.
The announcement was made via a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of PANDEF, Olorogun (Sir) Obiuwevbi Ominimini, Ph.D., and jointly issued by Professor College Clark and Ambassador Dr. Godknows Igali, OON, the National Chairman of PANDEF.
They described his passing as the fall of a “mighty Iroko tree,” highlighting his immense contributions to public service, politics, and community development over 75 years.
A distinguished lawyer, activist, and politician, Chief Clark was a leading figure for the South-South region and the Ijaw ethnic nationality. He founded PANDEF and co-led the South and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF), tirelessly advocating for justice, equality, and human rights.
Known for his outspoken defence of marginalised communities, Chief Clark’s contributions extended beyond politics into the legal profession, education, and community development, including the establishment of several universities.
“Pa Clark was a towering figure in Nigeria, renowned for his relentless advocacy for justice and human rights,” the statement read. “His brilliant mind and generous spirit will continue to inspire future generations.”
As he departs just months before his 98th birthday, PANDEF finds comfort in the biblical words from Acts 13:36: “After he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, he fell asleep and was allowed to rest.”
Chief Edwin Clark’s passing follows that of his longtime associate and fellow elder statesman, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, marking the end of an era in Nigeria’s political and social landscape.

Clark’s Death: Obasanjo Mourns Loss of Patriotic Leaders
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has lamented the diminishing number of the nation’s patriotic leaders, especially at a time when their wisdom and experience are urgently needed.
In a condolence message on the passing of Chief Edwin Clark, following the recent death of Ayo Adebanjo, Obasanjo described Clark as a great brother, a distinguished lawyer, a seasoned economist, and a revered community leader.
In a statement shared by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo expressed shock at Clark’s death, highlighting his dedication to his people and his vocal advocacy for improved conditions in the oil-producing states.
“It is disheartening to lose Chief Clark, especially so soon after the loss of Chief Ayo Adebanjo. The ranks of our patriotic leaders are depleting at a critical time in our nation’s history when their insights are invaluable,” Obasanjosaid.
He praised Clark’s extensive public service, noting his roles as Commissioner for Education and Finance in the former Midwestern State and as a federal spokesman.
Obasanjo acknowledged Clark’s commitment to minority rights during his tenure as a senator, calling him a dedicated patriot who championed peace and stability in the Niger Delta.
“Throughout his life, Chief Clark exemplified a commitment to democracy and inclusive governance, earning immense goodwill among his people. He was a unifying figure, transcending political partisanship,” Obasanjo added.
Recalling Clark’s continued contributions to national development, he mentioned Clark’s participation in the Committee for Goodness of Nigeria in 2021, addressing key national issues.
Obasanjo further reflected on the impact of Clark’s life, noting that his legacy of service and integrity should inspire future generations, as he is mourned not only in his family and the Niger Delta but throughout Nigeria.
Afenifere Mourns Clark
The Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, expressed its shock at the passing of foremost Ijaw leader Chief Edwin Clark.
Reacting to the news, the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Mr Jare Ajayi, expressed that Clark was passionate about Nigeria.
“Clark was very deep and, of course, very fearless. He was a patriot par excellence. Nigeria meant so much to him. The issues that affected the people were of great concern to him. He will be greatly missed because he was a strong, influential voice,” Ajayi said.
Ajayi conveyed the condolences of Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti, emphasising that Clark would forever be remembered for his contributions to the country.
“Pa Edwin Clark was an active player in the Nigerian political scene; even when he was very old, he remained active. He never shied away from commenting or expressing his opinion on any issue of national importance. Therefore, we in Afenifere will miss him, just as we know that others in the South-South, and indeed Nigeria as a whole, will miss him,” the Afenifere spokesman said.

The National Secretary of the Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP), Mr Peter Ameh, has said that the unexpected passing of prominent Ijaw leader Chief Edwin Clark has left a void in Nigeria’s history.

Ameh also remarked that Clark’s legacy serves as a reminder that leadership is not about personal gain but about serving others.
He affirmed, “He will be deeply missed, but his impact on Nigeria’s political and economic landscape will continue to inspire future generations. His passing has left a void in our lives, and we shall deeply miss his counsel and fatherly advice. However, his legacy will continue to inspire us, and we shall strive to uphold the values he embodied.”
Arewa Youths Mourn Clark
The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has mourned the passing of Chief Edwin Clark, describing him as a towering figure in Nigerian politics and a relentless advocate for the Niger Delta’s rights.
In a statement, AYCF President General Alhaji Yerima Shettima extended condolences to the Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta, following Clark’s death on Monday in Abuja at the age of 97.
Shettima noted that Clark served the country with distinction throughout his illustrious career, highlighting his roles as Commissioner for Education in the Mid-Western Region and Commissioner for Finance and Establishment in Bendel State, where he demonstrated a commitment to public service and regional development.
At the federal level, Clark made significant contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape as Commissioner for Information and later as a Senator, advocating for regional and national unity.
Shettima emphasised that beyond his political career, Clark was a leading voice for unity, evidenced by his leadership in organizations such as the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the South-South Peoples Assembly, and the Southern and Middle-Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF).
He praised Clark’s advocacy for resource control, fiscal federalism, and the development of the Niger Delta as a legacy of his tireless efforts to improve the lives of his people and all Nigerians.
