THE Vice Chancellor of the University of Delta, Agbor, Prof. (Mrs.) Stella Chiemeke, has called on lka sons and daughters, home and abroad, to contribute meaningfully towards the development of the lka Nation.
Chiemeke made the call during the 2024 Annual Congress of Ekwuoma Progressive Union (EPU) held at the Ekwuoma Town Hall in lka North East Local Government Area, Delta State.
In her lecture titled “Ekwuoma in the Emerging Communities of lka Nation: Challenges, Prospects and Critical Strides for Development,” the Vice Chancellor highlighted the urgent need to reposition Ekwuoma within the evolving landscape of the lka Nation and to implement critical actions for sustainable development”
Describing Ekwuoma as a kingdom rich in cultural heritage, renowned for its agricultural practices and craftsmanship, she affirmed that the community is a beacon of resilience supported by strong social ties.
Prof. Chiemeke examined the significant challenges facing Ekwuoma, including infrastructural deficits, youth migration, brain drain, social and economic divides, cultural erosion, and technological advancements.
She noted that the lka Nation is undergoing a transformative phase, driven by urbanisation, technological progress, and globalisation, which present both opportunities and complexities.
She emphasised the importance of infrastructural development in facilitating economic activities, improving access to markets, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.
To address these pressing challenges, particularly in infrastructure, the Vice Chancellor urged the EPU, especially the youth, to forge partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organisations to advocate for much-needed improvements.
Addressing economic disparities, she called for a commitment to developing inclusive growth strategies that prioritise marginalised segments of the community to ensure equitable development.
Earlier in his remarks, the EPU National Chairman, Apostle David Chinedu Onwualu praised Prof. Chiemeke for her insightful lecture, affirming the Union’s dedication to driving development within the community.
He announced plans for a cultural fiesta, fashion parade, and book launch at the next Congress, along with awards for distinguished Ekwuoma indigenes who have contributed to the kingdom’s advancement.
Meanwhile, the immediate past President General of EPU, Sir Chief Augustine Nwokolo, noted that under Apostle Onwualu’s leadership, the EPU is focused on revitalising and stabilising branches across the nation while establishing new ones both domestically and internationally.
Highpoints of the events were the adoption of resolutions from various committees, reports from the EPU National President, and a series of donations and goodwill messages.
