Warri North NUT Commends Ashima On Prompt Payment Of Teachers Salaries

  • Says His Performance In Less Than Two Months Impeessive

THE Executive of the Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT), Warri North Local Government Chapter, yesterday, commended the Executive Council Chairman of Warri North, Hon. Festus Ashima, for prompt payment of teachers’ salaries since resumption of office as the chairman.

The commendation was made when the NUT delegation, led by its Warri North Chapter Chairman, Comrade Jones Efele paid a courtesy call on the council boss to congratulation him on his victory at the last council election.

Comrade Efele said the prompt payment of teachers’ salaries has greatly uplifted their spirit to work as they now get their stations as at when due, a move, the teachers say was a positive one.

The union chairman used the opportunity of the visit to present some challenges the teachers say were affecting their wellbeing. Among the myriads of problems presented to Hon. Ashima by the NUT leader included: demand for release of pay-slip to their member to enable their members know the actually salary being paid, the problem of promotion stagnation, non-payment of promotion arrears of members which span between 2016-2020, absence of welfare packages as is the case with local government staff.

Other areas of demand by the teachers included: the problem of placing a ceiling to the teachers’ growth not beyond salary grade level 14, he said, dampens their zeal for excellence in their job.

He also asked the council boss to assist them with a union bus which could help them in their activities, just as they wanted support in completing their union secretariat.

In his response, the Council Chairman, Hon. Festus Ashima thanked the union Excos for the visit and assured them that all their requests would be considered within the limit of available resources even as he promised to try and provide teachers quarters for teachers who reside in the riverine communities.

On the team of the teachers was a former Nigeria Labour Congress and Nigeria Union of Teachers’ State Chairman, Comrade Jonathan Jemerugbe among other executives.
