The Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Local Government Area, Barr. Jero Egbo has revealed why the Council decided to shelve the distribution of flood relief materials to Ohoror community.
The relief materials, consisting packs of noodles, groundnut oil, palm oil, garri, and beans, provided by the Bank of Industry in conjunction with the Ughelli North Local Government, was going on peacefully until there was stampede by some youths, forcing the visitors to retreat.
The Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government, Barr. Jaro Omovudu Egbo, consequently, stopped the distribution to avoid stampeded and relocated the material to a safe place.
The Chairman said that the decision to distribute the materials was to alleviate the sufferings of the people living in the flood-affected communities, adding that the response by the community, especially the youths, suggested that they were seeking more sustainable solutions to their problems, rather than temporary fixes.
According to the chairman, the withdrawal of the palliatives and the team prevented what could have been a disastrous situation. He noted: “If we didn’t divert the palliatives, it would have caused a stampede. We do not want anybody to sustain injuries because of palliatives”.
The Ohoror-Evwreni community is one of the many affected areas within the Ughelli North local government area, which has a population of over 439,500 people, as projected in 2022.
